1. Purpose of the Contest and Rules of the Contest

1.1 The Contest “NOKIA Bell Labs Student Award 2018” (the “Contest”), is instituted by Nokia Solutions and Networks Kft, Bókay János u. 36-42, 1083 Budapest, Hungary, through its Nokia Bell Labs research facilities at Budapest (“Nokia Bell Labs”).

1.2 Through the Contest, Nokia Ball Labs provides to emerging research talent the opportunity to receive a dedicated and outstanding reward, following a review by a jury of experienced Nokia Bell Labs researchers and Nokia Bell Labs senior management, not only for their scientific work, but also for their personal presentation of that scientific work.

1.3 The jury will select the finalists, who will then be invited to present their work during the Nokia Bell Labs Future-X Day at Nokia’s Budapest campus on October 9, 2018 . The jury will thereafter select a winner, who will have the opportunity to discuss the work and presentation with Nokia Bell Labs senior management.

1.4 The Rules of Contest for the Contest (the “Rules”) in this document are binding upon all applicants. Applicants may apply for participation in the Contest only if they accept the Rules in their entirety as binding.

2. Application for Participation in the Contest and Acceptance of Application

2.1 Applicants who wish to participate in the Contest may register their submissions from 13 September to October 1, 2018 (the “submission deadline”), inclusive, using a website provided by Nokia Bell Labs. Applicants may submit applications as a team, and the number of team members is limited to three. Teams of applicants will be referred to as “applicants” in these rules.

2.2 Each applicant may only submit one application covering a specific scientific subject and addressing a specific scientific problem with a specific solution. Scientific subjects and problems will be acceptable if they are related to the fields of communications networks, the internet of things, artificial intelligence, information technology, and similar scientific areas.

2.3 Nokia Bell Labs only accepts applicants enrolled in a Master of Science degree program, a Ph.D. candidate program, or in a degreed engineer degree program. The applicant must submit proof of enrolment with their application and must inform Nokia Bell Labs of the universities or scientific institutions they are and/or have been enrolled in.

2.4 Nokia Bell Labs does not accept applicants if the applicants are employees or interns of Nokia legal entities, or members of the families of such employees.

2.5 Nokia Bell Labs will decide, at its free discretion, which applications Nokia Bell Labs accepts into the Contest, and will inform the applicants whether their application has been accepted. Nokia Bell Labs does not need to give any reason for its decision.

3. Contest Procedure and Schedule

3.1 The Contest consists of the phases defined in the following sections in chronological order.

3.2 The first phase commences with the submission of the application and concludes with the selection of the finalists.

a) The applicants must submit, via a website, information about their person, their education level and university or scientific institute they are working for or studying at.

b) The applicants must further submit the title, some descriptive keywords, and a short abstract of the scientific subject and scientific problem and its solution which their application covers as well as the electronic copy of a poster to be displayed physically at the Nokia Bell Labs Future-X Day in case the applicants are selected.

c) The applicants may decide, at their free discretion, to submit a video not to exceed a duration of three minutes. This video will be used for purposes of illustration only and will not be a factor in determining whether Nokia will accept the applicants. The applicants must not make this video available to anyone except Nokia.

d) All submissions must be completed before the end of the submission deadline.

e) The submissions by the applicants will be reviewed and evaluated by experienced Nokia Bell Labs researchers and Nokia Bell Labs senior management. Based upon this review and evaluation, Nokia Bell Labs will select, at its free discretion those applicants that will become Invited Presenters. The jury will also write short reviews to each of the submissions.

f) The jury will, in particular, but without limitation, select the Invited Presenters based upon the relevance and level of innovation embodied in their submission, the quality and compelling message of the poster display and the abstract. The jury will, in particular, but without limitation, consider whether the submissions are, concise, clear, didactic, compelling, and convincing, highlighting the issues of the scientific problem addressed, and whether the proposed solution appears plausible.

g) All applicants will be notified of the result of the jury’s evaluation by October 3, 2018.

3.3 The second phase commences with the invitation issued by Nokia Bell Labs to the Invited Participants and concludes with the selection of three Finalists by the Nokia Bell Labs jury at the Nokia Bell Labs Future-X Day.

a) Nokia Bell Labs will invite, by letter, the Invited Presenters it has selected to the Nokia Bell Labs Future-X Day on October 9, 2018 in Budapest. The Invited Participants are permitted to use the invitation letter to document their participation in the Contest.

b) Nokia will reimburse to the Invited Presenters from universities outside Budapest the travel costs they incur and prove.

c) The Invited Presenters will present their poster display in a tabletop exhibition at the Nokia Bell Labs Future-X Day. The Invited Presenters will not be permitted to use any other audio or visual material; this also excludes slide decks or other forms of presentation outside the poster display. The Nokia Bell Labs jury will visit each of the Invited Presenters’ posters. The Invited Presenters will present their submission to the jury verbally in an interactive presentation pitch of three to five minutes. Teams of Invited Presenters will share this time.

d) The Nokia Bell Labs jury will, at its free discretion, select three Finalists from the Invited Presenters. In making this selection, the Nokia Bell Labs jury will consider, in addition to the criteria described above and without limitation, the personal presentation style and discussion methods of the Invited Presenters.

3.4 The third phase commences with the selection of the three Finalists by the Nokia Bell Labs jury at the Nokia Bell Labs Future-X Day and concludes with the selection of the Winner by the Nokia Bell Labs jury.

a) After the selection of the Finalists is complete, the Finalists will repeat their presentation as an interactive presentation on stage to the general audience at the Nokia Bell Labs Future-X Day, limited to a duration of five minutes, including answering questions raised by the general audience.

b) Based upon this presentation, the Nokia Bell Labs jury will, at its free discretion, select one Winner from the Finalists. In making this selection, the Nokia Bell Labs jury will consider, in addition to the criteria described above and without limitation, the personal presentation style and discussion methods of the Finalists when interacting with the general audience.

3.5 The selection of the Winner concludes the Contest. No applicant shall have any legal recourse against any decision of the Nokia Bell Labs jury or Nokia Bell Labs.

4. Senior Management Access and Recommendations to the Finalists and the Winner

4.1 Nokia Bell Labs will issue, to the Winner and to each Finalist, a dedicated recommendation letter, indicating the purpose and the procedure of the Contest and the nature of the achievement. In addition to this, the Winner will receive a certificate and a trophy to document the achievement.

4.2 The Winner will have an exclusive discussion about the submission with Nokia Bell Labs Senior Management.

5. Intellectual Property Rights and Warranty

5.1 “Intellectual Property Rights” means any invention, copyright and right in a mark, a model, and more generally any element likely to be protected by the laws or international conventions on intellectual property.

5.2 Each applicant warrants to hold all Intellectual Property Rights relating to the submission. Each applicant also guarantees that they are the author of the submission including all content associated with the submission.

5.3 Participation in the Contest does not constitute an authorization to use or acquire any property rights in the trademarks, logos, inventions and rights of any Intellectual Property Rights of the Nokia Bell Labs.

6. Exclusion of Applicants from the Contest

Nokia Bell Labs reserves the right to exclude applicants from the Contest at any time if Nokia Bell Labs has a valid reason to believe the applicants engaged in unlawful behavior, which may include fraudulent submission or submission of the ideas and intellectual property of third parties as their own, or an attempt at manipulating the outcome of the Contest.

7. Publication of Information on the Winner

The Winner permits Nokia Bell Labs to publish information and reports in any medium, including social media, using photographs, videos, audio tracks, verbal statements and other information, including the first and last name, education details, city of residence, title, and the summary of their submission, associated with details of the Contest and their achievement.

8. Limitation of Liability

8.1 Nokia Bell Labs reserves the right to shorten, extend or cancel the Contest at its free discretion. In this case, the liability of Nokia Bell Labs is limited to the travel expenses of the Invited Participants that would otherwise be reimbursable in accordance with the Rules.

8.2 Participation in the Contest does not, with the exception of mandatory statutory rights not subject to modification by contract, give the applicants any rights not expressly named in the Rules.

9. Applicable Law

The Rules are governed only by the laws of Hungary.
