Mark Selby

Vice President Industry Liaison and Collaborations, Nokia

Mark Selby has responsibility for Nokia’s relationships with external industry, academic, regulatory and citizen organisations in identifying and realising next generation mobile applications and technologies. A recognized authority on mobility, emerging technologies and convergence, he has worked in the mobile, broadcast and IT industries for over 20 years.

Mark was formerly Vice President, Multimedia, with global responsibility for Nokia’s multimedia experience operations, including Mobile TV, Radio, imaging, audio, video, and Social Media and Networks implementations.

Prior to joining Nokia in May 2004, he was Senior Vice President at IMG Media/TWI, responsible for the group’s mobile activities in sports, entertainment, TV, radio and online, including production, rights and technology. IMG Media/TWI is the largest independent sports TV producer.

Mark was formerly CEO of Mobile Channel Network, which designed, produced and delivered a wide range of mobile services, including Essential Sports, MTV mobile, Big Brother and Mobile Ibiza. He has worked with many rights holders, including Manchester United and Liverpool Football Clubs, the International Rugby Board, the International Olympic Committee, musicians, athletes and models.

Mark’s previous roles include President of Solid Information Technology, Executive Director Health On the Net Foundation, President Internet Society, Geneva, radio producer and presenter at WRG-FM, board member of Linux International and senior executive roles at Digital Equipment Corp. and Xerox. He was appointed Expert to the European Commission on EDI in 1987

Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo

President and CEO, Nokia

Olli-Pekka Kallasvuo is the President and CEO of Nokia. Olli-Pekka joined Nokia in 1980 and has held roles of increasing responsibility since that time. On October 1, 2005 Kallasvuo was named President and COO before being appointed to his current position. He holds a masters degree in law from the University of Helsinki. He has been a member of the Group Executive Board of Nokia since 1990.

Anssi Vanjoki

Executive Vice President, Markets, Nokia

Starting January 1, 2008, Anssi Vanjoki is Executive Vice President of the new Markets unit. In this function Anssi is responsible for sales, marketing, manufacturing and logistics of all Nokia products and services. He is a member of the Nokia Group Executive Board, a position held since 1998.

A highly respected brand and marketing authority, Anssi has been a visionary force in Nokia's efforts to address mobility markets. His work has focused on developing the Nokia brand and the convergence of mobility and the Internet. From 2004, he served as Executive Vice President and General Manager of Multimedia, with overall responsibility for the Nokia Nseries multimedia computer device fleet and Nokia services.

Anssi joined Nokia in 1991 and was named Vice President, Sales, Nokia Mobile Phones, before his promotion in 1994 to Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones Europe and Africa. In 1998 he was made Executive Vice President, Nokia Mobile Phones Europe and Africa. In addition, in 1999, he took responsibility for Nokia's Digital Convergence Unit and, in 2002, also headed up the Business Unit Management.

Anssi is the chairman of the board of Amer Sports Corporation, and was a member of the Governing Committee of the European Foundation for Quality Management 2001 - 2003. He is a Knight, 1st Class, of the Order of the White Rose of Finland and Commander of the Order of the White Rose of Finland.

Prior to joining Nokia, he held a variety of management positions at the 3M Corporation.

He holds a master's degree in economics from the Helsinki School of Economics and Business Administration.

Lee Williams

Nominated Executive Director for planned Symbian Foundation

On October 20, 2008, Lee Williams was nominated as the Executive Director for the planned Symbian Foundation by the ten initial board member companies of the foundation.  He will remain in his current role at Nokia until January 1, 2009, or until such time as the foundation and its leadership team are in place and operational.

Lee Williams is currently head of the S60 Software organization in Nokia’s Devices business, responsible for managing, and delivering key Nokia software assets for the companies’ products. This includes the S60 software platform, related applications and product software for Nokia's S60 based devices and internet based services. Lee is also a member of the Board of Directors of Symbian Limited.

He was the former head of Engineering and Product Development for Be, Inc. Products included the BeOS Operating System, BeIA an Internet Appliances platform and related applications and services. Be was acquired by Palm Computing and he joined as the head of Product Development and Delivery at Palm. Palm OS 4, 5 and smartphone based variants were delivered during his tenure at the company. He also led the Engineering Product Development Group at PalmSource, the software platform company responsible for licensing the Palm OS platform to global consumer electronics and smartphone licensees. After leaving Palm, and before joining Nokia, Lee was the General Manager of the Mobility Software Division for Symbol Technologies, before it was acquired by Motorola.

Lee is married with two children and will relocate to the UK with his family to take up his role with the Symbian Foundation.

He received his Ph.D. from Rutgers University following studies at Brown University, Oxford University, and St. Olaf College.

Dan has authored three books, including Body of Truth: Leveraging What Consumer’s Can’t or Won’t Say, (2004), Emotionomics: Winning Hearts and Minds, (2007) and Face Time: How the 2008 Presidential Race Reveals the Importance of Being ON-EMOTION in Politics, Business and in Life (2008).

Dan and his wife, Karen Bernthal, a clothing designer, live in St. Paul, MN.

Niklas Savander

Executive Vice President Services & Software, Nokia

Starting January 1, 2008, Niklas Savander is Executive Vice President of the new Services & Software unit. He is a member of the Nokia Group Executive Board, a position held since 2006.

He joined Nokia in 1997 and has held a variety of senior business management, strategy, sales and marketing positions covering the device and network businesses. In his previous role as Executive Vice President, Technology Platforms, he was responsible for the centralized R&D execution, software and technology management as well as product creation processes across the company.

In 2003, Niklas was appointed Senior Vice President, Mobile Devices Business Unit, Enterprise Solutions.

He is the deputy Chairman of the Board of Directors of Tamfelt Oyj and a Member of the Board and secretary of Waldemar von Frenckells Stiftelse. On April 1, 2007 Savander was also appointed as a Member of the Board of Nokia Siemens Networks.

Prior to joining Nokia, he spent nine years with Hewlett-Packard in Finland, Germany and Switzerland. During this time, he held roles ranging from the position of account manager to leading the company’s Technical Systems Business for Europe, Middle East & Africa.

He holds a Master’s degree in Science from the Helsinki University of Technology and a Master’s of Business Administration from the Swedish School of Economics and Business Administration in Helsinki. He is fluent in Swedish, English, German and Finnish.

Niklas was born August 4, 1962, in Helsinki, Finland. He is married and has two children. And he enjoys playing and refereeing ice-hockey, telemark skiing and golf.

Leonard Waverman

Professor of Economics at London Business School

Leonard Waverman is Professor of Economics at the London Business School. He is the in-coming dean at the Haskayne School of Business at the University of Calgary. Professor Waverman’s current research is on the growth and productivity impacts of the rollout of telecommunications and computers. His analysis of the impacts of mobile phone rollout on growth in Africa was the subject of the ‘Economic Focus’ section of the Economist, March 12, 2005.

His most influential publication is “Telecommunications Infrastructure and Economic Development” joint with Lars Hendrik Roeller, American Economic Review, Sept 2001. He is currently finishing a book (joint with Melvyn Fuss), entitled The Networked Computer, to be published in 2008 by Cambridge University Press. Dr. Waverman was for five years until May 2007 a non-executive Board member of the UK’s energy regulator – the Gas and Electricity Market Authority. He is member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the German Institute for Economic Research in Berlin (DIW) and a Fellow of Columbia University’s Centre for Tele-Information. He is on Vodafone’s Advisory Board on the Social Importance of Mobile, and is a Director of the Nexus Mundi Foundation. He is a non-executive Director of Boltblue, a highly successful mobile service start-up. At LBS, he directs executive education programs for Nokia China.

He was on the Advisory Committee introducing Competition in Ontario’s Electricity system (1995-1996), a part-time Board Member of the Ontario Energy Board, as well as of the Ontario Telephone Service Commission, and a member of the US National Association of Regulatory Utility Commissioners (NARUC) for 6 years. He edited the major Journal in energy economics – The Energy Journal for 6 years.

Professor Waverman is a citizen of Canada and of France and has received the honour of Chevalier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques from the Government of France.

Yochai Benkler

Author & Professor of Law, Harvard

Yochai Benkler is the Berkman Professor of Entrepreneurial Legal Studies at Harvard. Prior to coming to Harvard, he was Joseph M. Field ‘55 Professor of Law at Yale. He writes about the Internet and the emergence of networked economy and society. Since the 1990s he has been a major theorist of the role of commons and radically decentralized individual action and collaboration in the production of information, knowledge and culture, as well as the organization of infrastructure.

Yochai’s work traverses a wide range of disciplines and sectors. It is taught in schools of law, business, and information sciences, and in departments of communications, media studies, computer science, economics, and political science. In real world applications, his work has been widely discussed in both the business sector and civil society.

His recent book, The Wealth of Networks (2006), and his earlier work, have won him awards from civil rights and social movement organizations, such as the Electronic Frontier Foundation’s Pioneer Award for 2007 and Public Knowledge’s IP3 Award in 2006, and was called a “reveille for netizens” by The Times of London and “Internet utopianism for grown-ups” by The American Prospect. At the same time, Wealth of Networks has been called “perhaps the best work yet about the fast moving, enthusiast-driven Internet” by the Financial Times, and was named the best business book about the future in 2006 by Strategy and Business. His work has been the subject of reports in The Economist, BusinessWeek, and the Wall Street Journal, as well as general publications like the New York Times and Time magazine, exploring the implications of the emergence of networked information economy.
